Thanks to their knitting skills, craftswomen create their own unique style of clothing. Bolero serves as an excellent addition to various things, emphasizing their individuality. The variety of patterns and knitting techniques allows you to create new and beautiful capes every time, surprising those around you with new clothes.

Boleros can be knitted or crocheted. Some models are made only with knitting needles. Works crocheted with an openwork pattern look great.

Depending on the intended purpose, boleros are knitted with yarn of different thicknesses.

For winter and autumn models choose:

  • wool mixture,
  • wool,
  • angora,
  • mohair.

There is a large selection of mixed yarn, for example, melange with the addition of acrylic, merino (consists of different types of wool). When choosing mixed yarn for a warm bolero, you need to pay attention to the composition so that the wool component is more than 50%.

Summer models are knitted from yarn based on:

  • cotton,
  • silks,
  • flax

How to knit a bolero:

In this section, some models are knitted in parts, when the back, front, and sleeves are knitted separately and then joined. There are also works in which the back and shelves are made in one piece, and the sleeves are knitted separately and then sewn to the main piece. The edges of the cape can be finished off with a hook. Or, for example, in the description of the “Irish roses” model, flowers are crocheted and then sewn to the shoulders. The main detail in this work is also done in an interesting way. It is knitted entirely, and then the corners are joined. It turns out very original and simple! The openwork collar and crochet trim on the sleeves look beautiful.

Knitting a bolero can go in different directions from top to bottom and vice versa, depending on the type of model. The shrug is not performed at all in a standard way, when the model begins to be knitted from the sleeve, then moves to the shoulders and back, adding stitches as indicated in the description. The knitting ends with another sleeve. And no seams. The cape is knitted with a fastener on the front or side, or without it. There are models that are worn over the head.

What to wear with:

Boleros are worn in warm and cold seasons. It will warm you on a cool summer morning or decorate an open summer dress, while at the same time covering your shoulders from the sun. In winter, the cape is great to wear under outerwear and will not let you freeze in severe frost. The bolero will update boring things, giving them freshness and originality. And the ease of execution will allow you to quickly update your wardrobe. It's worth treating yourself to a brand new bolero.

According to one version, it is believed that Spain is the birthplace of the bolero. Why not, because the bolero could only appear in a hot and sultry country. The exact date of his birth is unknown to anyone, but it is assumed to be 17-18 centuries.

Initially, the bolero did not have sleeves and belonged to the men's national costume. Later, courageous bullfighters donned boleros with sleeves.

Another version suggests that the bolero is the outfit of women who danced the dance of the same name. In theory, it doesn’t matter how and when this piece of clothing appeared, we should be grateful to history that the bolero remains fashionable today.

Bolero fashion these days

In the 21st century, men do not wear boleros, only women retain their love for them. And many fashion designers include different forms of bolero in their collections.

Women love the bolero for its versatility; it suits almost any look and style of clothing. Unless you can wear it to the office, although cropped jackets and blazers can be called a bolero at a stretch.

Modern stores offer us to purchase bolero from materials of very different textures:

  • Knitted from yarn
  • Made from suit fabric
  • Denim, etc.

And since our site is dedicated to knitting, we have prepared a selection of knitted boleros from different types of yarn, with and without sleeves, openwork and warm.

What to wear with a bolero?

Bolero goes very well with different clothes. For example, a knitted dress and a bolero will complement each other perfectly. In summer, when it’s hot, a bolero can be worn with a T-shirt or top in combination with shorts, trousers or a skirt. A flowing skirt, a knitted bolero - just imagine what a romantic look you will get!

And in the fall, with jeans, a bolero will emphasize your waist and keep your hands from getting cold. So choose the most beautiful boleros and knit to your heart's content!

A knitted bolero is an unusual thing and without additional decor. But if you decorate your work with a fabric flower or embroidery, you will turn a cute jacket into fashionable and practical clothes that you won’t be ashamed to show off in, both on holidays and on weekdays.

The bolero is a wardrobe element that came to us as part of the national costume and has firmly become everyday or dressy clothing, depending on the model. A wide variety of types of bolero have already been invented:

  • with fasteners and wide open;
  • with long, short sleeves and sleeveless vests;
  • having length to the waist or short, barely covering the shoulder blades.

With such a variety of patterns, there are also different ways to knit a bolero.

The models can use complex patterns with openwork patterns, braids, and simple knitting methods that even a novice needlewoman can handle.

If you don’t have enough knitting skills, but you want to knit an original item, you can use melange yarn. Such yarn can have a variety of colors, while the distance between sections and the sections themselves of different colors can be from a couple of centimeters to several meters. Products made from this type of yarn always turn out unusual and original. Also, using interesting grass yarn or with bombs, decorated with beads, stones, while knitting with regular satin stitch, you can knit a fashionable item.

Knitting is done with stockinette stitch from the neck down in a single fabric, followed by stitching in the sleeves along the raglan line. Using the pattern diagram you can see how our bolero will look during the process and at the end. Scheme:

If you use yarn with a bulky thread and knitting needles of a sufficiently large diameter, this significantly speeds up the work. For a product size 44 - 46, cast on 56 loops and distribute them as follows:

1 raglan loop, 12 sleeve loops, 1 - raglan, 28 - back, 1 - raglan, 12 sleeve loops, 1 - raglan.

For beginner knitters, a useful tip is to use markers to mark raglan stitches. The marker can be a thread of a different color or pins. This is necessary to make increases correctly and evenly. In all front rows on both sides of the inner loops denoting the raglan, we make an increase; near the outer loops we make an increase only from the inside. When the raglan line reaches 26 cm, close the loops. Sew the sleeves at the connection points according to the diagram. Along the edges of the shelves, neckline and back, cast on loops and tie 15 cm in stockinette stitch. To prevent curling of the edges, you need to evenly add 8 loops in the third and fifth rows. Close the loops.

Boleros are used as a decorative element of a wardrobe. It can be decorated with ribbons and beautiful decorative buttons. Sometimes you can find models that consist of only sleeves and a stripe on the back; this type of bolero is popularly called “sleeves”. Knitting a bolero is a good opportunity for beginners to try their hand.
